Performing Poetry Event

Friday 2nd October 2026 | 10am-12pm

Performing Poetry

In September Chichester Festival Theatre presented the inaugural ‘Performing Poetry’ event, a rehearsed reading of the GCSE poems from the Power & Conflict Anthology performed by professional actors, with in person shared insight and tips from an examiner.

This event offered students the opportunity to experience selected poems from the GCSE anthology spoken and performed aloud. Whether students are commencing their journey in Year 10 or on their final lead up to exam, this event aims to deepen their engagement with the text, understanding of poetic form, language, tone, and context, supporting their curriculum goals. This performance-based approach supports both the Literature and Spoken Language components of the GCSE English qualification.

By offering a closer insight through live performance this event aim is to inspire and challenge responses to the poems, build comprehension and cultural capital whilst enriching their personal and academic development.

This reading will explore ‘Power & Conflict’ with poems which feature in exam board anthologies including AQA, Pearson Edexcel, CCEA, Eduqas.

WOW! Thank you so much for the opportunity to attend this. The life that each of the actors brought to the featured poems was just what was needed as invaluable revision alongside the 'wise words' from the examiner in terms of the dos and don'ts for the exam. There was a definite buzz from the students, some of whom would have liked a longer session.

The performances were excellent, giving new voices to the poems that students are studying. Hearing the actors and the students discuss their favourite poems bought a smile to my face.

I found the advice to read the poems aloud to best understand and revise them really helpful.

~

I never thought that these poems could be ‘performed.

~

I feel that I know these poems much better now and can see and hear how they connect.

Listening to actors present these poems using different voices made me reflect on the poets’ words.

~

I finally understand structure!

  • Curriculum & Assessment Review | October 2025

Professor Becky Francis’s national curriculum review in England calls for a more balanced, flexible and future-focused education system. It recommends shortening and reducing high-stakes GCSE exams, slimming down overloaded subject content, and increasing time for life skills, enrichment, citizenship and arts. The review proposes scrapping the English Baccalaureate, introducing diagnostics (e.g., Year 8 tests), and modernising subjects like computing with AI and oracy included. It draws on over 7,000 responses and emphasises evidence-led, incremental reform rather than radical change, aiming to make the curriculum more inclusive, relevant and less exam-driven while maintaining core academic standards.

Industry Feedback

  • Dani from Cameron Mackintosh Ltd

‘Today has been really good - we have spoken with a very diverse group of people that we would never usually get the opportunity interact with. It’s great that people can learn about the different jobs and roles that we, and other organisations have available- often they didn’t know that the opportunities exist. Events like this are so important, especially reaching people before they get to college. Many of the events we do are for people who are 18 and over, so it has been great to talk to teenagers about possible careers so that it can support their decision making when considering school and college courses.'

  • Cory from Rolls Royce

‘We have been able to showcase what we can do to individuals with creative skill sets who might want to consider other options when they leave education. This event is opening their eyes to different opportunities and things that they might not know or have seen before. There are so many creative aspects to the work we do that young people may not be aware of, and it’s great to be able to share what we do.'

  • Outreach Coordinator from LW Theatres

'It's been great to speak to lots of different students. and give them more insight into the different roles there are in theatre. Having regional events is so important -there are lots of opportunities in London which unfortunately, many students are not able to access.'

  • Paul from West Sussex Music

'It has been great to see how engaged the pupils were in the workshops and to hear the quality of the questions at the end. They were really attentive and interested and I think got a lot from the sessions. I think events like this are extremely important because I personally don’t think there's enough happening at the moment to highlight the breadth of pathways into the creative cultural industries. People think it’s all about learning to play an instrument, but don't understand that there are another 300 roles in the music business and so many different career opportunities to explore.'

  • Willow from Theatre Inc, Chichester College

'It's been a wonderful day, and our students have really enjoyed it. It's been brilliant from an accessibility point of view- we teach students with additional needs, and they have loved the day and learnt a lot. Events like this are super important to show our young people that there are options for them. We have had a couple of students that had no idea about the backstage, technical side of theatre and they are really interested after listening to the talk and getting to ask questions. It’s been brilliant.'

2024-25 Theatre Visits

The logo for theatre works is inspiring young lives.

In November & December 2024 Theatreworks funded theatre visits for over 220 children from 5 schools across West Sussex to attend the Chichester Festival Theatre as part of an initiative to offer theatre opportunities to children from underrepresented communities.

2025-26 Theatre Visits coming soon

My favourite part was when they had to try to fit the shoe onto one of the sisters. It was funny because it didn't really fit and they had to chop off a bit of her foot and it was funny.

Year 3 child.

It's important for children to go to the theatre because it's fun!

Year 3 child

I really liked it - the singing was really nice. I haven't been to the theatre before - it was really cool.

Year 6 child

It was magical watching this alongside the children. I loved every one of their giggles, squeals and gasps of excitement. Thank you so much for helping us to provide this opportunity to the children - it really was a memorable experience for so many of them!"

Activities that schools have been asking us to deliver include;

CPD on drama techniques that can be transferrable, e.g. warm-up activities for behaviour management, concentration techniques etc.

Workshops about delivering Shakespeare's stories and words to a variety of year groups. How to use drama as a tool across the curriculum

More support on showing students arts pathways into the world of work, or as an important part of health, wellbeing, leisure activity as an adult

A really helpful and valuable tool for students would be an Arts Passport for Sussex/Surrey: groups, after-school clubs, holiday arts clubs, museums, kid's shows, etc.

We would benefit from a further practical workshop session (Shakespeare) for children or perhaps linking up with other schools you are aware of who have run a full enrichment day or week

"Theatre can teach us so much about ourselves and about others, it can help us to be empathetic, sympathetic and most importantly laugh together. When children and young people experience live theatre it gives them that all important stepping stone to enable a lifelong relationship, and hopefully light a spark for the next generation of theatregoers."
